Welcome to the World of Dance!
Ballroom dancing at Capital Dance CenterDancing is fun. You’re gonna love it! According to a common myth, some people are “born with two left feet.” Not true! Another myth is that some people have “no sense of rhythm.” Nonsense! Everyone can learn to dance!

Remember, all the beautiful dancers you see at the Capital Dance Center were beginners once. Of course, some people learn dancing faster than others, but everyone can learn enough to have fun on the dance floor. Learning new skills does takes time* and repetition. Everyone learns at different speeds; just relax, keep practicing and of a sudden… you’ll “get it” Great fun!

How to Get Started
The best way to start is to take introductory group lessons. (Press the Special Events button on the home page.)  You can come to the lessons with a partner, but most people come as singles.  This is especially beneficial because your instructor will then tell you to rotate partners. Dancing with a number of different partners helps you to learn faster and to develop lead/follow techniques. With just a few lessons you should be comfortable getting out on the dance floor and moving to the music.

Private Lessons
Many dance students learn more easily from private lessons. In a private lesson, your instructor works with you on a one-on-one basis and dances with you so you get the feel of doing it right. To arrange for private lessons at your convenience, call Jeanne Iben of Capital Dance Center at 635-2600. She will talk to you about your dancing goals and recommend the ideal teacher for you.

* Incidentally, women generally learn to dance much more quickly than men. When couples take lessons it is common for the woman to learn new patterns three times a fast as the man. One reason: the man is responsible for leading; the woman simply has to follow.
